Over the course of years, in our profession as mountain guides, we have been able to observe first hand the advantages and disadvantages of various heliski destinations as well as assess the reactions, requirements, desires and priorities of the clients. With this in mind and following numerous discussions regarding our personal experiences we began investigating the possibility of opening our own operation, based on the following criteria:

• Proximity to Europe so as to minimize the length of time taken to get to the base as well as the avoidance of a jetlag.
• A mountain range of sufficient size and with surrounding summits of greater than 3000m.
• Proximity to the sea to ensure regular snow cover and a stable base.
• Small groups of heliskiers / boarders, max 4 groups of 4 to 5 people per week per base.
• Use of guides and pilots who have extensive experience in this discipline,
• Option of a private week with the exclusive use of a helicopter and a guide at your disposal.

And we found our ideal playground, fulfilling all our criteria, in Turkey!

Mount Kackar, North East Turkey, close to the Black Sea is where we do ski. We have chosen an awesome stretch, some 100 km long by 35 km wide. The highest summit is 3.900m with the average vertical drop between 700m and 1’200m. The range is reputed for its good snow and the stability of the snow cover due to the proximity of the ocean.

We chose Turkey for its proximity to Europe and the abundance of mountain ranges that cover at least half the country. The most well known peak, Mount Ararat, reaches 5’165m.
The majority of the summits in this area are above 3’500m and these regions benefit from regular snowfalls throughout winter. You will be captivated by the beauty of the land and the friendliness of the people.

Proximity, altitude, snow stability, conviviality, exclusivity and highly experienced guides and pilots, this is what we offer to you, at Europe’s door.

Alpine forests? Tea plantations? Billions of hazelnuts? World's oldest cherry orchards? Turkey's Black Sea coast comes as a surprise. The sky is often grey but the land is green from plentiful rain. Fat dairy cattle munch lush grass and produce the country's best milk and butter. Fresh sardines are a delicacy.

The Black Sea coast is never crowded because cloud is more common than sun, and the sea water is chilly. But that's fine with the adventurous types who come here for a few days to savor its deep history, its dramatic beauty, its special cuisine, and its prime legend: The Kackar (or Little Caucasus) mountains, rising from the Black Sea, is an area hardly known outside Turkey. Here the inhabitants still lead a nomadic life, traveling with their livestock from one valley to the next, in search of fresh grazing.

Mount Kackar attracts large numbers of nature lovers every year. They flock to the high pastures, camping sites and the shores of glacier lakes. Some people take photographs, some go climbing, some camp in the woods to enjoy the peace and beauty of the unspoilt scenery and for the last 2 years some people go for heliskiing. The summit of Kackar is as busy as the lower slopes. The ascent from the south is the easiest, and every year hundreds of climbers take this route.

So long as there is no mist, the view from the summit over the Eastern Black Sea Mountains is unforgettable. The north route to the summit, suited to more experienced climbers, has the added advantage of passing by the yayla (mountain pasture) of Ayder, where the thermal spa is the perfect way to relax after the strenuous climb.

Accommodation; will be at the Hotel Hasimoglu in Ayder. The rooms are small but comfortable, with an ensuite bathroom and shower, a telephone, satellite TV, mini bar and hairdryer are provided. In the hotel, you can enjoy the use of a Turkish bath, a whirlpool and an internet connection. You have the possibility of placing in a single room with the help of a supplement of € 250 for the week.

Other Activities; A thermal spring spa with water at 40 degrees is located adjacent to the hotel….the perfect way to end a long day skiing. You can visit the surrounding region or a historical village on the edge of the Black Sea. Snow shoe trails. Horse trails and in ski touring.

Briefing; Each stay begins with a briefing of safety considerations for an enjoyable heliskiing experience. Every skier receives a leaflet with all needed information. The procedure of loading and unloading the helicopter are part of this briefing. Practical session will follow the theory in which you’ll practice using your avalanche transceivers.

Clothing; As the climate is similar to that of the Alps, your usual skiwear will be adequate for your week’s heliskiing. As the helicopter rides are shorter than those on chairlifts and it is not cold inside the helicopter, you will find that you do not get as cold as you do when skiing in a station. Your gloves however will become wet far quicker as you need to clear the snow off your skis and boards in order to pack them into the ski pods.

We advise you to take one or two extra pairs of gloves as well as a pair of mittens. Bring along strong sun protection and don’t forget a decent pair of goggles, the powder is deep and even in good weather ordinary sunglasses will rapidly become clogged with powder.

Shopping; A small shop will be able to supply forgotten or lost equipment such as goggles, gloves, sunscreen, etc.

About Turkey & Stopover in Istanbul; If you haven’t already spent some time in this wonderful historic city, we highly recommend you to do so. The city that connects 2 continents, Europe & Asia, the city that has been hosting different cultures and religions since ages, the city that never sleeps.

Historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople is Turkey's most populous city, and its cultural and economic center. It is located at 41° N 28° E, on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of Turkey.

Istanbul extends both on the European and on the side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. Istanbul is also the only city in the world which served as the capital to three different Empires: The Roman Empire (330-395), Byzantine Empire (395-1453) and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1923). Today its population is approximately 13 million and increases at an estimated 700,000 immigrants per year. Industry has expanded even as tourism has grown. It continues to be a city that creates its own history at the intersection where both Continents meet.

There are many interesting museums, castles, palaces, mosques, churches, and historic hammams. Some of the interesting districts of the city are: Haydarpasa, Uskudar, Eyup, Galata, Perapalas, Ortaköy, Bosphorus, Taksim, Eminönü and Sultanahmet. Princess Islands are a popular.

Enjoy the magnificent Palace of Sultans, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, unforgettable sights and sounds along the Bosphorus. Flights from Europe usually arrive in Istanbul late afternoon. We recommend you to stay in a hotel that is centrally located so that you can easily access the main attractions.

If you arrive at Istanbul on Saturday night we recommend you to stay in a hotel close to the airport. The domestic flight from Istanbul to Trabzon departs at 07:00 on Sunday morning.

Electricity; Electricity is 220V and the plug points are identical to those of the 2 prong Swiss plugs.

Formalities; Swiss citizens need to present a valid passport or identity card on entry to Turkey. No visa is required for a stay less than 3 months.

EU citizens need a valid passport and are required to obtain a visa at an office specially set aside for this purpose just before immigration control.

Health; No vaccinations are required to enter Turkey. If you have a sensitive stomach, or are taking a specific course of treatment, please ensure you bring your medication with you.

Time Difference; Turkey is at GMT + 2 or CET + 1.

Money and Foreign Exchange; The currency is Yeni Turkish Lira (YTL). It is easy and far more advantageous to exchange money once in Turkey. You will be able to change money at Istanbul airport, your hotel or in any bank. You will also be able to draw money from the numerous cash machines with your EC card or credit card. Please take care when paying with or changing cash, the number of zeros can be confusing. Credit Cards are accepted in Turkey.

Taxis; Yellow taxis are numerous and can be recognized easily. Make sure the driver resets the counter when you get in. The rates are reasonable, approximately EUR 20-25 from the airport to the city center (Taksim). Late night, between 24:00-06:00 tariffs are approximately double.

Tipping; Tipping is expected only in restaurants, cafes and bars. Other places it is not expected but is certainly appreciated.

If I arrive to Istanbul on Saturday night where can I stay?
You can stay at the airport hotel to take your Trabzon flight which leaves Istanbul at 07:00 the next morning. If you arrive earlier we suggest you to stay in a downtown hotel to take the maximum advantage of the beautiful city.

Do you provide snowboards or shall I bring mine?
No we do not provide snowboards but skiis. Please bring your own snowboard.

Do I have to be an expert for Heliskiing?
You must be both capable and experienced in handling a mixture of conditions, whether they are on one plank or two. You should have considerable skiing experience in a conventional resort setting. Your run choices are predominantly blue/ black and you ski them with confidence in almost any conditions (flat light with dust on crust to give an extreme example!).

As a result of the valuable efforts of the Turkish Ministry Of Tourism, the travel insurance is now obligatory for all travelers by law. In addition, we kindly would like to aware you that most of the countries and their related consulates require a health insurance with a minimum coverage limit of Euro 30.000 to confirm your visa.

During your travel, you may have some health problems and high expenditures accordingly. Lost baggage, robbery, lost ticket, law issues, etc. are also within the possibilities of a travel. We highly reccomend a travel insurance to financially protect yourself abroad.

If you do already have a health insurance please double check if it is valid in and out of Turkey and if it covers also lost baggage, robbery, lost ticket, law issues, etc. Please be aware that some insurances are very cheap and do not cover most of the above mentioned topics. Please do not forget that the coverage limitations of an insurance is the most important thing to know.
