HELISKI IN CANADA

Canada is where heli skiing has begun, and for many, this is where they return year after year. Accommodation and heliskiing are generally first class. Experience the advantage of skiing or boarding with “only two groups per helicopter” that means almost no waiting for the helicopter and the ability to ski and board at your pace.

Difficulty Of The Activity; You must be both capable and experienced in handling a mixture of conditions, whether they are on one plank or two. You should have considerable skiing experience in a conventional resort setting. Your run choices are predominantly blue/ black and you ski them with confidence in almost any conditions (flat light with dust on crust to give an extreme example!). For more details please read Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

SAFETY

Always Our Number One Priority !
Safety is our first priority and as a result our guests have the opportunity to experience exciting and challenging skiing and riding with safety and enjoyment.

Internationally certified English speaking local guides; are chosen not only for their guiding skills and qualifications, but also for their enthusiastic and outgoing personalities. They are professional guides who have passed a series of comprehensive examinations to qualify them as members of the A.C.M.G. and the U.I.A.G.M., the recognized Canadian and International Mountain Guide Associations. They are experienced at balancing exciting and challenging skiing with the safety and enjoyment of the entire group. Internationally certified English speaking local guides also participate in yearly refresher courses as part of their ongoing training as certified mountain and Ski Guides.

Mountain Safety; Weather and snow conditions are continuously monitored by internationally certified English speaking local guides and snow safety team. Terrain and specific runs are discussed based on the current conditions every morning. In spite of our best efforts, there are inherent risks and hazards associated with helicopter skiing that are beyond our control and that you must share with us. It is therefore important to follow the directions of internationally certified English speaking local guides at all times.

ALL guests visiting the resort will be trained to use the Mammut BarryVox Transceiver. It is an avalanche rescue transceiver with dual frequency functionality. Simple one touch button operation is intuitive and easy to use - even for the uninitiated. Please refer to our FAQ page for answers to questions about using an Avalung or an ABS air bag system.

Helicopters and Pilots; Our guests enjoy the comfort and reliability of an 11 passenger, jet-powered Bell 212 helicopter. For smaller private groups we use a Bell 407 or AStar B2 helicopter. Our pilots are chosen to meet the same high standards as internationally certified English speaking local guides and have a wealth of experience flying in the mountains. Helicopter maintenance is provided by our on-site team of engineers.

Emergencies; Continuous radio contact between the pilots, guides and the lodge ensures reliable communication in the event of an emergency. There are always 2 radios in each group. One radio that the guide carries and another in the guest pack which is then worn by the last skier or rider in the group. The guest pack contains a radio, extra probe, extra shovel, spare gloves and hat, heat packs and a first aid kit. The guides carry emergency equipment in their packs, additional equipment is carried in the helicopters and there are several rescue caches within our ski area. If needed, two hospitals and additional helicopter bases are within 30 minutes flying time.

A short movie will be shown to highlight the photos. Full DVD of images with soundtrack or individual dry-mount pictures are available for purchase in the gift shop.

Internet Services; Yes we have a medium-speed connection. Things To Consider Before Booking A Trip; The steps involved to secure your seat to heliski or heli-board with us are as follows:

• Pick your preferred date to heliski with us.
• Each seat is secured with a non-refundable deposit of EUR 850.
• Final payment is due 90 days prior to your trip start date.
• Next? Get fit and be ready to enjoy yourself.

Fitness Regime; The fitter the better. Clear? A daily stretch routine is highly recommended as it speeds up recovery and prepares you for another great day in the mountains.

Layering; temperatures may vary but the helicopter is warm and walking through waist deep powder does get the internal temperature up. We advise that you dress in layers so that temperature adjustment is easy. An extra layer can also be removed if the day gets warm.

Praying to 'ULLR the Snow God'; ULLR Is the Norse God of Skiing and Archery. Pray daily and present offerings whenever possible as this may prove to be the difference when you visit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I buy my international air ticket, visa, trip, medical and trip cancellation insurances ?
We will provide you all, please contact us.

Where is the lodge located ?
Our lodge is located 125 miles (200 km) Northeast of Vancouver, British Columbia. It is a 6.5 hour trip via ground transfer or 1.2 hours by helicopter. Please review our location map.

Why shall I choose you ?
Only 2 groups per helicopter which means almost no waiting time and MORE ski time! Remote mountain lodge with the helicopters only 100 steps away. We only ski with 2 groups per helicopter. This means that our guests don't have daily bus rides and long waiting times for the helicopter. Instead, they are able to ski and snowboard a greater variety of runs in a vast area every day at their own pace. Our climate zone provides us with lots of dry snow and sunny weather and only about ½ down day per week. Add more than 300 runs accessible in 10 different mountain ranges and you have the place for a superb heliskiing or heliboarding vacation.

Do you mix skiers with snowboarders ?
Yes, mixed groups do happen. If there are problems with group chemistry, the guide will make the necessary changes, but we generally find that whether on one plank or two, everyone gets along and enjoys their turns.

Can I bring my snowboard ?
Yes. We do not have any rental boards at the lodge. Please ensure that you have any extra pieces or parts for your board that will come in handy in the event of breakage.

Can I be reached at the lodge ?
Every room at the lodge has its own telephone. In addition, there is a fax machine available in the lodge office.

Can non-skiers come too ?
Yes. Non-skiers can be accommodated.

When are the best conditions?
This is the million dollar question. The weather is slightly different every year and dreamlike skiing / boarding conditions can be requested but not guaranteed! Since we began operations in 1991 we have had the full range of conditions, but one of the main reasons guests return year after year are the reliable and stable weather patterns that we receive in the South Chilcotin Mountains. December, January and the beginning of February are typically slightly colder and the days shorter than later in the season. If you have yet to heliski during the early season, consider it a must. As temps remain cooler at this time of year, conditions at lower elevations provide us with excellent tree skiing in poorer weather conditions.

Mid-February through mid-March has historically been the most popular time for heliskiing and generally should be booked around 12 months in advance to secure your space. Days become longer, the weather tends to stabilize still with regular snow storms passing through from the west.

Late March and April offers skiing and particularly boarding conditions which have always been under-rated. Leave your golf clubs locked away, grab your skis and your board and experience long days, big vertical and still be skiing powder. The conditions from day to day in April tend to change a lot faster.

Are skis included with my Heliskiing package ?
Yes they are. No hidden costs here and we have a few choices for you. Your skis will be professionally adjusted and maintained by our ski tech staff. Clients may choose to bring their own skis and may still use ours while at the lodge.

How good do I have to be ?
Heliskiing is not for novice skiers or snowboarders - there we said it! As much as we would like everyone to have the chance to visit our heliski operations, we want to make sure that all our guests equally enjoy their experience. Conditions and terrain can vary widely, from wide-open alpine bowls and glaciers with moderate pitches to steep and narrow tree skiing. Snow conditions can range from boot-top powder to wind-pressed crust, heavy crud and anything in between. Our internationally certified guides do their best to find the optimal conditions, but for reasons of snow safety and in difficult flying conditions, our terrain options do become limited. Any type of conditions can be expected at any time throughout the heliski season. There isn't a 'guaranteed good week'.

You must therefore be both capable and experienced in handling a mixture of conditions, whether they are on one plank or two. You should have considerable skiing experience in a conventional resort setting. Your run choices are predominantly blue/ black and you ski them with confidence in almost any conditions (flat light with dust on crust to give an extreme example!). Your skiing ability has improved year after year and you are capable of multi-day ski trips. You may not have the style of a paid skier, but you have the confidence to keep up with friends and you know when you are making some 'good turns'. You can make parallel turns with confidence and if the situation arises, you can; side-slip, step-up sideways, traverse and make kick turns. In the process of becoming a better skier, you have made the transition from novice level equipment to high performance gear and can also spot the difference. You may not have tons of powder skiing experience but you can maintain control in backcountry conditions.

I've never used an avalanche transceiver - is it difficult ?
ALL of our guests will be trained to use the Mammut BarryVox Transceiver. It is a modern avalanche rescue transceiver with digital display (LCD) and analog search mode (acoustic signal). Simple one touch button operation is intuitive and easy to use - even for the uninitiated.

Can I bring my airbag ?
Guests are welcome to use the ABS airbag system. Other systems are not permitted. You will be required to remove them from your person before entering the helicopter and store them in the helicopter as per the guides instructions.

What about visitors with special dietary needs ?
Please let us know about any special dietary needs prior to your heliski trip with us. If we do not know ahead of time, we cannot adequately prepare.

Is there a somewhat high-speed Internet connection?
Yes we have a medium-speed connection. Despite our best efforts to convince clients that they will enjoy their holiday more without connecting to the World Wide Web, some clients do need this service. Check your web-mail on our free terminal or bring your wireless-ready laptop and we’ll get you connected (rates apply).

Are there professional photography services available ?
Yes we have Pro Photography services at the lodge. Your own powder profile? You bet. Our photographers take turns with most of the groups and usually come back with great photos. A short movie will be shown to highlight the photos. Full DVD of images with soundtrack or individual dry-mount pictures are available for purchase in the gift shop.
