TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1, River Club, Livingstone; On arrival in Livingstone you are met by a Wilderness representative and transferred to The River Club.

Your guide will meet you in the reception area at approximately 18h00 for a safari briefing and welcome drink.

The River Club is situated on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River, 18 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls. The camp has a distinct Edwardian flavour and guests here have the opportunity from here to travel a short distance to enjoy the sights and sounds of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River in a peaceful and tranquil setting away from the crowds. Ten luxurious, thatched chalets overlook the Zambezi River, and have en-suite facilities including a bath, shower, toilet and basin. All the rooms have fans. The rooms are all completely open in the front giving guests the best possible views of the Zambezi. The main dining room and lounge also has an interesting library.

The Zambezi National Park is located just across the river, and elephants are often seen on the riverbank. A rich bird life is found in the area. Hippos are regularly sighted (and heard) along the river's edge. Enjoy a guided tour of the Victoria Falls, one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 1708 metres wide, it is the largest curtain of water in the world and drops more than 100 metres into the sheer Zambezi Gorge. Boating to the Zambezi River's islands provides relaxed afternoon activities, and fishing and sundowner trips are offered.

Days 2 & 3, Lunga River Lodge, Lunga River, northern Kafue; Located on a raised bank of the Lunga River and within lush riparian bush each of Lunga River Lodge's six well-appointed thatched roof chalets share a brilliant vantage point over the river's meandering channel. Each room is stylishly furnished (with minimalist touches) and includes an en suite shower, flush toilet and vanity basin. Lighting is by 12v lamps, candles and kerosene lamps.

Activities through the Miombo woodland, riverine forest and grasslands include day and night game drives in open Land Rovers, walks, canoe trips, river cruises and possibly bream fishing.

Days 4, 5 & 6, Busanga Bush Camp, Busanga floodplain, north-western Kafue; Busanga Bush Camp is located deep inside the wildlife haven of the Busanga Plains. Placed under the large thorn trees of a small tree island, the camp features superb views of the flat game-rich plains that surround it. Accommodation is in four canvas mini-chalets with thatched roofs and en suite hot and cold shower, flush toilet, and basin. Each room has a wooded feel, with reed blinds, teak wooden chairs and a wooden bed frame surrounded by a mosquito net. A large canopy tent, bar and lounge provides a perfect ambience to make friends and share stories around the campfire. Floodplain, grassland and woodland islands comprise a habitat suited to extended game drives, by day and night.

Day 7, End of Exploration; After a morning activity our safari ends at the airstrip. Due to guests combining Kafue with various other destinations, our safari ends at the Lunga airstrip, allowing our guests the flexibility to tailor their onward arrangements you.

Note; This safari is available for private trips for small groups or families, dependant on availability and subject to a different pricing based on the number of guests travelling.

GREAT ZAMBIA JOURNEY

This desperately poor country is extravagantly rich in wildlife and wild terrain. Its game parks are among the best in the world, and it shares with Zimbabwe two of the scenic highlights of southern Africa: Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River. But Zambia's attractions are a bit difficult and expensive to reach, which means they're unspoiled but also a challenge for independent travelers.

We think Zambia is well worth the challenge, particularly if you're interested in pursuing the raw edges of the "real" Africa, and if you're keen on seeing wild animals in a truly wild setting. Kafue National Park, Zambia's largest protected area, is easily accessible from Livingstone and Lusaka. It extends over 22 400 square kilometres and is roughly the size of Wales. This enormous and little-developed pristine wilderness area is home to an impressive variety of big game including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo and hippo. In addition, the Kafue conserves some fascinating species of special interest including Lichtenstein's hartebeest, sable, roan, puku, the diminutive oribi, and, incredibly, lechwe in their thousands. Boasting almost 500 recorded bird species, Kafue is truly a diverse African National Park.

The spectacular Busanga Plains in the north of the park is a vast flat expanse and forms one of Zambia's most significant wetland resources. This enormous watery wilderness, flooded in the wet season (mid-December to end May) by several rivers and tributaries covers an enormous 750 square kilometres. After the rains the floods reach their height from March to May, and large pods of hippo are stranded in the shallow pools that are left as the water recedes in the dry season.

Kafue, combined with the cascading waters of the thundering Victoria Falls (one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World) creates a short diverse itinerary that is perfectly for add-on tailored extensions to Cape Town, Botswana, Luangwa and Malawi.

Experience a nostalgic, old-style luxury serviced camping / lodge safari that recreates the sense of a game-viewing adventure reminiscent of the times of the great African explorers in the vast Kafue National Park.

ACCOMMODATION

Most of our guests come from developed countries and have travelled extensively, often staying in the best hotels. The vast majority of our guests do not want a conventional hotel room out in the bush when they come on an African safari. What we try to do is to provide the atmosphere of Africa, as it was 100 or 200 years ago, but still offer comfort. It is a very delicate juggling act to get this balance right.

We provide our guests with many of the comforts of a hotel room ~ but when our guests lie in bed at night we want them to feel the pulse of wild Africa. When Lions roar, they must hear the roars, but they must also be safe! Experiencing this wildness in a brick building is nigh impossible. So most of our camps are tented or are under thatch with canvas walls. These rooms offer a safe sanctuary, but have atmosphere.

The design of our rooms is such that our guests experience every comfort. Each camp's interiors have been tastefully designed. We supply large deluxe beds, fresh linen, towels, face cloths, good lighting (though this is often 12 volts). Even all the soaps and shampoos are supplied. We always have en suite bathrooms with flush toilets. Some camps even have an additional and optional outdoor shower or bath "under the stars" to get you even closer to nature if that's what you enjoy. The camps are sprayed on a regular basis with an enviro~friendly pyrethroid chemical that is effective against mosquitoes and malaria. We have a remarkably good record in this regard.

Safaris that include Camping; A few of our safaris include some serviced camping, such as our Explorations safaris in Botswana, Namibia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Each departure is open to a maximum of 8 guests (minimum 2). Explorations allows guests to experience Africa in a very traditional way, affording a true "out of Africa" encounter and guided throughout by dedicated and experienced professionals. Meals are often prepared in front of the guests, and generally enjoyed under the stars around a well-lit dining table; all this enhancing the atmosphere and camaraderie.

There are two types of Explorations, each with its own style of accommodation: Discoverer and Adventurer.

Fully serviced Discoverer safaris expertly combine luxury lodges with camping in walk-in Meru-style tents, elegantly designed in ‘old brass’ and teak, pure cotton linen, hanging canvas wardrobe and sumptuous beds. Our camp is lit by hurricane lanterns and 12v electricity with each tent enjoying en-suite and private flush toilets and hot water bucket showers. A full bar and dining area is set under our 8m x 5m dining tent, complete with teak director chairs and candlelight.

On Adventurer safaris, a philosophy of partially serviced camping exists with tin styles, thus setting the tone for an adventurous but comfortable wilderness experience. Each large 3m x 3m dome tent is fully furnished with comfortable camp stretchers and bedrolls (with pure cotton linen), a bedside table (with 12v electricity) and two small luggage racks. Each camp has two separate flushing toilet systems and two hot water bucket shower systems. Amenities and towels are also provided. Camp is lit with hurricane lanterns and has a 5m x 5m dining area, set with metal director chairs and tables with linen tablecloths.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Duration; Ready to go packages are designed for 7 days.

Maximum Participants; Guaranteed departure for minimum 2, maximum 8 participants. Private itineraries for Tailor-Made trips for small groups can be arranged.

Routes; To maximise guests' travel time, a variety of travel modes that bring out the best of each area is used: flying in charters and private overland transfers which provide both a bird's-eye view and an in-depth visual experience of the contrasting landscapes of Zambia.

Age restrictions; A minimum age requirement of 12 years applies unless sole use of a particular departure is paid for. Upper age limit is 75 which can be waived on a receipt of a medical certificate confirming good health.

Guides; The entire safari is guided and hosted by professional trained guides, who share their in-depth knowledge to present a seamless safari experience.

Exclusive experience; There is an 8 sq. km zone around our private camps. As the area in which we operate is a public, there is a small chance outside this zone to encounter other guests. Busanga Bush Camp is private and for the use of Exploration travellers only, while River Club and Lunga River Lodge are open to all of our guests.

Seasonality; We believe that to truly enjoy an amazing journey in the Kafue, you will need three nights in Busanga. Due to the immense diversity of habitat and associated experiences, from riparian forest, broad-leafed and Miombo woodlands (around the Lunga River Camp to the open plains of Busanga, each camp and guide can take ample time to clearly showcase these highlights.

Baggage; For safety and because space is restricted, baggage in charter aircraft is restricted to a maximum of 12kg (20kg for Botswana and Namibia ONLY) per person in a soft bag. This includes camera equipment and carry-on baggage. Should guests arrive with excess baggage without prior warning their baggage could be delayed as baggage may have to be flown into camps at a later stage at considerable extra cost to the guest. However, should the guest know in advance that the baggage will exceed the limit, an extra seat can be booked for the bags on the aircraft, at an additional cost.

Wild Animals; Please be aware that these safaris may take guests into close contact with wild animals. Attacks by wild animals are rare, but no safari into the African wilderness can guarantee that this will not occur. Neither the company, nor their employees, nor agents can be held responsible for any injury or incident on the safari. Please note that all our camps are unfenced.

Health; Anti-malaria precautions should be commenced prior to departure. Please consult your doctor for specific advice. If you are a contagious-disease carrier, you must let us know when booking your safari.

Problem Solving; We pride ourselves in running quality itineraries and offering the best experience possible for such a remote location. If there is anything you feel that we can do to enhance your experience, please do not hesitate to contact the camp and/or hotel manager or our representative.

If you have a problem, please bring it to our attention at the time, giving us a chance to try and correct it immediately. If you do not bring the problem to the camp and/or hotel manager or our representative's attention at the time, you will not receive a sympathetic ear after your safari.

Private Vehicles; If you would like a private vehicle and guide, we can arrange this for you at an additional cost and subject to availability. If you elect not to take up this option you will be travelling with other guests on activities. We would appreciate acceptable behaviour on the vehicle that will ensure that all our guests have enjoyable game drives.

Driving Conditions; If visiting remote areas or national parks and reserves, the roads could be rough and bumpy and occasionally we will travel "off road", where it is possible that injuries may occur - if for example a hidden pothole is struck. Neither our group of companies nor their staff members, associates nor agents can be held liable for any accidents or any damages!

Satellite & Iridium Telephones; Telecommunications in the urban areas are easily accessible but please note that the safari lodges and camps you may be visiting could be located in very remote parts of Southern Africa and often do not have telephones.

An increasing number of guests have been bringing satellite phones along with them on safari. As most people come on safari to "get away from it all", we feel that we must set some limitations on the use of these phones when on safari. We suggest the following guidelines on the use of satellite phones:

1. Please ensure the ring tone is kept at a low volume to avoid disturbing other guests.
2. Please use your phone in the privacy of your room and not any of the common areas: dining room, bar/lounge area, or on any of the vehicles or on game drives

Smoking Policy; We have a no smoking policy at meals, on our vehicles, on the aircraft, and on boats (in fact anywhere where there is a fire hazard). If you are a smoker, we will have "smoke breaks" on the drives to keep you happy! We ask that you respect this ruling, and thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Children In The Wilderness; We believe that Africa’s greatest assets are her natural resources and her children. Our guests have the opportunity to develop and preserve both these resources. Africa’s rural children are largely underprivileged, some ofthem have never seen the wildlife on their own doorstep.

We have developed a remarkable initiative in southern Africa called Children in the Wilderness. This
initiative has been running successfully for almost five years and has already exposed many young people to their wildlife heritage and its potential to create value and livelihoods for their communities. Children in the Wilderness aims to create a network of learning sanctuaries that uplifts, conserves and cares for our children and our planet. The programmes are dedicated to helping children whose childhoods have been disrupted by life-threatening conditions such as illness, poverty and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Through these programmes we focus on developing their self esteem and educating them with the life skills necessary to actualise their greatest potential.

In order to ensure the success of this project, we need support and funding from Partner organizations. If fully prescribed, the programme can host 17 500 "children in camp bed-nights" per annum, FREE OF CHARGE! To do this we need about R4 million per annum which covers the operational costs. We administer this initiative at no cost and absorbs many other indirect costs.

To help raise funds for the programme and ensure its longevity, we are appealing to all our agents to encourage their guests to voluntarily add US$10 per person to the cost of their safari. Guests are obviously not obligated to contribute, but if they wish to contribute US$10 or contribute more it would be a wonderful act of kindness. This extra payment is allocated directly to the Children in the Wilderness programme. For all our sponsors we have a Children in the Wilderness newsletter that gets circulated on a regular basis. On request any guest can receive a copy of this newsletter.

This is what the Children in the Wilderness programme is all about:

• Each year we aim to host about 1 000 rural children on the programme in our safari camps in Botswana, Namibia and Malawi for a week at a time, free of charge. We close down some of our camps to guests during that time and open them to the children.
• To often these young people have inadequate education, especially when they are in classrooms with little or no facilities and often with 100 children per class. The aim of the Children in the Wilderness programme is to offer these students a unique experience that provides them with life skills that they may not get elsewhere.
• This programme motivates and inspires the students to (a) finish their schooling and (b) give them extraordinary environmental experiences that inspire them to care about their wildlife heritage - and even motivate them to become botanists, biologists, field scientists, field rangers or conservationists. (To help African parks become sustainable, we must have people running our parks who have real passion for wildlife. This programme has the potential to achieve this!)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the age limits on safari?
Bookings with children between the ages of 8 and 12 years (between 4 and 6 years at Jack’s and San Camps, where the age policy is different: children may be 8 years or older) are allowed on condition that a private vehicle is available and booked for game viewing activities. Private vehicles for families are not normally charged for and are subject to availability. There is no age restriction on the following camps: Kulala Wilderness Camp, Kulala Desert Lodge, North Island, Rocktail Bay Lodge and Pafuri Camp. When booking a camp for exclusive use, there is no age restriction.

What does the package include?
We try to be as all-inclusive as possible in our camps and on our safaris. All the camps and safaris listed have all the core activities included in the cost, and many include drinks and laundry as well. Optional excursions such as hot air ballooning, helicopter flights and scuba are naturally excluded. However, all the main activities, such as park fees, game drives, game walks, mekoros, boating and meals (with the exception of city centres such as Victoria Falls and Windhoek), are included. Most camps and some safaris even include local drinks, mineral water, beers and wines! As a general rule, the Botswana and Zimbabwe camps and four paw safaris, as well as that of the Skeleton Coast, include all local drinks, mineral water, wines and beers. In Namibia, all wine at dinner and all soft drinks on game drives in our own camps are included, but not included in hotels and lodges owned by others. As the tariffs in our Malawi and South African camps are low, we unfortunately have to charge for drinks. Please consult your itinerary for the exact details of what is included and excluded.

Do you have guaranteed departures?
All of our fly-in safaris have guaranteed departures for a minimum of two people - and some have guaranteed departures for one guest once they have paid the single surcharge. Our vehicle and camping safari departures are guaranteed once you have paid your deposit and we have confirmed your booking in writing. You can therefore book your safari safe in the knowledge that we will not cancel your holiday. We are one of the very few companies who offer this guarantee. With us, you can plan your holiday with confidence. A comprehensive information pack detailing important information about your safari will be sent to your agent prior to departure. Please make sure you receive this.

Are there fences in the camps?
We do not build walls or put up electric fences around our camps, nor are the campsites we use on some safaris fenced. Animals do sometimes wander through the camps. Please listen to your guide's instructions to ensure you are safe. There has never been a guest injured in any way in a tented camp or campsite who has obeyed the rules. Keep your tent door or flaps closed and you will be safe. We provide flashlights in all camps, but some of the camping safaris require that guests bring their own.

How about your guides?
We pride ourselves in the dedication, experience and enthusiasm of our guides. From top management to camp staff, we are committed to ensuring that everything is done to make each safari a memorable experience. Our professionalism has attracted guides who are serious about a career in wildlife and are very experienced in their region of operation. They are all excellent naturalists, keen conservationists, and quite a few are accomplished photographers.

What is the size of your camps?
All our camps are small. Our smallest comprises of three rooms and our largest, ten rooms. Most are between four and eight rooms, so that guests enjoy great exclusivity and personal attention. The small size of the camps also ensures that we minimise our impact on the area.

What is the minimum and maximum participant number?
Our safaris may take a minimum of two people, and a maximum of eight to twelve. The safaris that include a vehicle component are normally limited to eight guests in total. Our fly-in safaris can sometimes take ten or twelve, depending on the size of the camps and the aircraft used.

How about the traveling companions?
On scheduled departure safaris we have weekly, bimonthly or monthly departures. On these safaris, you will be travelling, for the duration of your trip, with a small number of like-minded people, possibly from a range of age groups and usually from several different areas of the world. These safaris attract people from all walks of life, but all have a passion for the wilderness. Part of the experience is the way the group interacts. There is nothing like being out in the wilderness to bring out the best in people. To get the most out of your experience, co-operation and harmony with fellow travellers is essential. Please do not book a safari of this nature if you are a grumpy individual or if you do not enjoy travelling with others.
