TOUR ITINERARY

Day by day itinerary; travelers should keep in mind that this is a unique expedition to a remote and very little explored part of the globe. Our sample itineraries should therefore be read as a guide only, depending heavily on weather and ice conditions, as well as on other circumstances.

Day 1, Moscow; we arrive in Moscow and stay at a 5 Star hotel located in the city center.

Day 2, Murmansk; after breakfast at the hotel we arrive to the airport for our 2-hours flight to Murmansk. In Murmansk we embark to the icebreaker "Yamal". We sail late in the evening.

Day 3, Franz Josef Land; today we are headed towards the Franz Josef Land archipelago. We are introduced to the ship and the sophisticated technical equipment in the engine room, as well as to the basic principles of ice navigation and the navigator's job. We also learn about helicopter operations, and we are instructed how to use safety equipment and lifeboats. Lifeboat Drill is to follow.

Day 4-5, The 80° North Latitude; we cross 80° North latitude and penetrate the frozen world of the age-long pack ice, towering volcanic mountains, icebergs and glaciers. Discovered only in 1873 by Austrian expedition aboard the "Tegetthoff", most of the archipelago remains largely unexplored. Our onboard helicopters afford astonishing views of the area's magnificent landscape.

We plan to call at Calm Bay to view Rubini Rock and its numerous nesting seabird colonies, closely approaching the sheer basalt cliff if conditions permit. There is a deserted research station close by, while enormous fragments of calving glaciers are sometimes seen offshore. We also expect to spot polar bears and walruses. Surprisingly, the polar bears often ignore the ship, and even curiously approach it, thus enabling us to take wonderful photos. We might visit Cape Norway where Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen wintered in 1896-1897.

Day 6-7, Towards the Pole; heading north, the "Yamal" forces its way through thick, multiyear pack, riding up on top of several meters of ice that breaks under the ship's tremendous mass.

Our expedition is divided into several groups to board the helicopters and watch the operation of our vessel from above. Once a solid piece of ice is found, the ship stops and we take a walk on the ice. During these days scientists, travelers, and explorers who have dedicated their lives to this austere world deliver series of interesting lectures.

Day 8, The North Pole; today in the evening the expedition expects to reach the geographic North Pole. As our vessel steadily approaches 90° N, we meet on the bridge of the "Yamal" to celebrate our achievement. Upon reaching our goal, we disembark onto the ice. The crew of the ship prepares for a celebration, including a picnic on the ice, and the most daring take a plunge into the Arctic Ocean. Special communication facilities permit contact with civilization to share our achievement with friends. The celebration is in progress...

Day 9-11, Course Due South; Our icebreaker moves on, smashing through high ice hummocks and pack ice. We make ice reconnaissance flights and flightseeing excursions. On our way back, if the weather and ice conditions permit, we intend to visit some extra places on Franz Josef Land or Novaya Zemlya.

Day 12-14, The Barents Sea; on the way to Murmansk we recall the exciting experience of our wonderful voyage, full of discoveries and adventures. We belong to a selected group of people who have conquered the North Pole. The same day we fly to Moscow and stay at a 5 Star hotel in city center.

Day 15, Moscow; depart from Moscow. At last you can cross the North Pole off your ‘things to do in my lifetime’ list. You’ll be glad you did. Your memories will last you a lifetime. And your stories will leave your children and grandchildren speechless.

EXPLORE THE NORTH POLE

Our aspiration is to reach the "Top of the World", visiting historic sites and learning wildlife on the way to the North Pole. We are going to travel aboard the most powerful vessel in the world, the icebreaker "Yamal", to 90° north latitude.

We begin our journey from the port of Murmansk, Russia and will travel north via the Barents Sea towards the archipelago of Franz Josef Land, a strikingly beautiful area of glaciers, volcanoes, and wildlife. The journey continues through an everchanging panorama of wind-polished ice up to five meters thick, narrow channels of dark green water and aquamarine pools scattered across the frozen sea. Witness the immense polar landscapes from the bridge or deck of the ship as well as from the expertly-piloted helicopter.

Along the way, in this stunning setting of ice and snow, it is hoped to encounter a variety of Arctic wildlife including polar bears, walrus and ivory gulls. Indeed, to stand at 90° north is precisely the aim of this historic voyage. From the Geographic North Pole, head south to the wild and wonderful world of never-ending pack ice, towering volcanic mountains, icebergs and glaciers of Franz Josef Land before returning across the Barents Sea to Murmansk thus ending this amazing journey.

The North Pole has been conquered, but it is still by no means an easy place to get to. This extraordinary voyage to the ‘top of the world provides the opportunity of a lifetime. Here is a chance to add your name to the short list of adventurers who have made the ultimate journey to the top of the world.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Location; Our tour starts with one night accommodation in Mezdunarodnaya hotel located in Moscow city center half an hour distance from the international airport. Following day, we take 2 hours flight to Murmansk where we embark I/B Yamal at the Murmansk Harbor on the Barents Sea. The Murmansk Region is located in the northern most territory of Northwest Russia on the Kola Peninsula, above the Arctic Circle.

The city of Murmansk is the region's administrative center and the largest city of the Arctic Circle, located 1967 km. north of Moscow. Due to the region's proximity to Norway and Finland, Murmansk Airport conducts international flights to several cities in both countries also has scheduled domestic flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg every day.

I/B Yamal depart from Murmansk Harbor and arrive to the North Pole in one week journey. The North Pole is one of the last places on Earth almost untouched by the human civilization, also known as True North, lies in the Arctic Ocean. This region of the planet, north of the Arctic Circle, includes the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Baffin Island, other smaller northern islands, and the far northern parts of Europe, Russia (Siberia), Alaska and Canada.

The geographic North Pole is covered by nothing but a sheet of shifting ice on the surface of the Arctic Ocean. The North Pole and Arctic Ocean had been generally considered international territory and there is no official marker for the position.

Climate; the climate within the Arctic Circle is very cold and much of the area is always covered with ice. The best time to visit the Arctic is mid summer July and August. This time of year the weather is usually mild, with air temperatures of 0 - 1° C (32 - 34° F). There is almost 24 hours of sunlight a day by this time of year. The sun rises at the North Pole on the Spring Equinox, approximately March 21, and the sun rises higher in the sky with each advancing day, reaching a maximum height at the Summer Solstice, approximately June 21.

In the mid winter months, the sun never rises and temperatures can easily reach lows of – 30 degrees Celsius in the higher latitudes. The darkest time of year at the North Pole is the Winter Solstice, approximately December 21. There has been no sunlight or even twilight since early October. The darkness lasts until the beginning of dawn in early March.

Duration; our tour package is designed for 15 Days / 14 Nights (2 Nights 5* hotel accommodation in Moscow, 12 nights in I/B Yamal). Nevertheless, if you would like to extend your stay, please contact us, we will be happy to make necessary arrangements as per your requirements.

Maximum participant; this product is guaranteed departure and accepts 1 to 100 participants.

Tour guide and Expedition team; English and German speaking internationally certified local guides available on the board. Our icebreaker has an experienced staff of 150 persons, including 50 employees and mechanics. As Russia's icebreaker fleet is considered to be the worlds biggest and most up-to-date, Russians are recognized experts in polar research. The expedition is directed by an experienced leader with a staff of specialists chosen for their local knowledge and expertise.

Members of local Expedition Team have one thing in common: all of them are devoted to the Arctic. What really matters is, they are open and frank people, willing to share their Arctic experience with you. Their job is to keep your Arctic adventure exciting and thrilling, yet absolutely safe. Icebreaker Expeditions to the Russian Arctic are anything but boring.

Lectures on the wide range of topics are followed by the Zodiac trips to the glaciers amid the icy fields, then by helicopter landings to the picturesque islands… and so on. Local lecturers deliver the scientific information to you in the most understandable and informal manner, while the Zodiac drivers and helicopter pilots try to make the most of every excursion for you to get a better idea of our destinations.

We always keep an open eye for the Arctic wildlife, while sailing or ashore: something may appear from nowhere, and we have to react fast. You are advised timely, as soon as any representative of the Arctic fauna is near and can be seen.

The most sophisticated modern equipment on board and the experience and skills of the Captain and the crew make these incredible voyages happen. For many years the nautical crew has been successfully guiding cargo vessels across the Arctic sea routes, and, during the last decade, doing passenger expeditions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You may be wondering how comfortable icebreakers' cabins are?
Our icebreakers have thoroughly cozy and comfortable cabins. They all feature outside windows, one fixed berth and one convertible sofa, a lavatory and a shower, closets for personal belongings and a desk. Besides, "Yamal"’s cabins are equipped with on-board video circuit monitors.

How do I spend my free time on board during the expedition?
An important part of our voyage is lectures delivered by noted naturalists, scientists and experienced Polar explorers. Documentary, feature film and slide shows are to be held. Entertainment programs are drawn up and announced by our staff daily. Many tourists prefer to spend their spare time on the navigation bridge watching the ship force her way through the ice. This vantage point affords the opportunity of viewing sights of unmatched beauty. Our open decks can also give you chance to enjoy breathtaking sights of the Arctic wildlife. Our icebreakers also have well-stocked bars and libraries, as well as saunas and swimming pools with heated sea water.

What is the on-board cuisine like? Can all passengers of a vessel have a meal at one time?
Exquisite international cuisine is at passengers’ disposal. Highly qualified chefs with experience at five-star restaurants will cook dainty dishes for you. There is a buffet service on board the vessel, where you can order a main course for your dinner and supper. Our dining rooms are spacious enough to accommodate all passengers in one seating.

What should I bring along? What to pack? What clothes are worn on board the vessel?
The atmosphere on the vessel is quite informal. Most tourists choose to wear T-shirts and jeans, which have proved to be ideal for the landings by helicopters or as underwear for waterproof trousers used at landings by Zodiacs. More detailed information about the things to take along we send to all passengers with the pre-departure materials.

How much time do we spend ashore?
Since the North Pole is the main goal of the cruises aboard "Yamal", we willy-nilly spend most time treading our way through multiyear pack ice to the Top of the World. But on our way back home we will make a call at Franz Josef Land archipelago to visit its historic places and view its natural beauties

Franz Josef Land is the main goal of the cruises aboard "Kapitan Dranitsin". There are many historical sites and rich wildlife on the islands. So we will give you a chance to spend plenty of time ashore.

We are not experienced travelers. Do we need some special preliminary training?
No preliminary special training is required. To undertake any travel you have to be just sufficiently healthy. Our cruises make no exception. Actually, for the most part the Arctic wildlife can be observed from the decks of the vessels. When landing ashore, we always try to spot places where we can take a closer look at the wildlife and marvel at it without exerting our strength.
In any case, our staff is always around, and ready to help you in your exploration of the fragile Arctic environment.

Is there a doctor on board the vessel?
Yes, there is an expedition doctor and a small infirmary.

What weather conditions are in store for us?
The weather in the Arctic plays a pivotal role. Unfortunately, no absolutely reliable weather forecast can be made even for some hours ahead. This notwithstanding, our experienced captains, ice experts and our professional staff, with the help of advanced navigation equipment, will take you to a desired place on time. They will do their best to make sure the passengers get to know the Arctic as close as possible.

Will our route be the same as described in the brochure?
No, it won’t. The itinerary outlined in our brochure is there for guidance only. Many decisions on the routes to follow are made depending on the situation. Besides, in our expeditions we always try to visit and explore places that have never been reached by explorers, to make sure our tourists get a thrill of genuine pioneers of the Arctic. Anyway, the Captain and the Expedition Leader, the consummate professionals, will make final decisions.

Will it storm during the cruise?
While covering Arctic expanses between the Archipelagoes we may possibly get into rough sea. But once sheltered by islands in ice-bound waters, you won’t feel any ocean swell or heavy sea.
